Chapter Twenty-One

“MORE COFFEE?” Gordon poured himself a second cup and hovered the pot over Colby’s mug.

He’d made Olivia blueberry waffles, and she was munching away happily. Despite all the drama of the day before, she didn’t seem nervous for her first day of school at all, now. Colby sat right next to her, eating his bacon, which seemed to be the way with breakfast for them, while Gordon hung out on the other side of the island where he could easily serve up more eggs or another waffle.

He’d struggled over what to wear, which was exactly as ridiculous as Colby told him it was, but that didn’t change the fact that he wanted to look… right. Like a guy who gave a shit. Like a guy who had things under control. Like a guy who knew damn well he was going to be remembered. Even more ridiculous was that he’d settled on his usual casual wardrobe anyway—jeans and a button-down oxford—and he had a sports jacket in case the morning was chilly.

Colby seemed more relaxed. But Gordon knew there were a handful of ways to play this, and he needed to pick just the right one.

He blinked at Colby. “Sorry. Did you say yes?”

“Yes, please. You want I should cook some eggs for you? I will.”

“Thanks, I’m good.” Gordon filled his mug and set the pot back on the warmer. “How are your waffles, Liv?”

She nodded. “Mmm” was all she said because her mouth was full. Emma had taught her girl some manners, that was for sure.

“Good.” He pulled out his phone and checked the time—again—and then stuck it back in his pocket. “You riding with me or taking your truck?”

“I’ll ride with you. Parking is a challenge at best at a school, huh?”

“I would think.” He could handle this. He had to handle this. He’d asked Colby to step up; he wasn’t going to do anything less himself.

He sipped his coffee, watching Colby and Olivia chat. The two of them were adorable together. Colby really was pretty remarkable. It didn’t get much worse than what happened to him—and then his family’s reputation, their safety—that was a lot to put on the shoulders of a kid who just wanted….

Who just wanted to be loved. And a man who never believed he’d hear anyone say it.

Yep. He needed to play this right for sure. It was a hell of a lot more than just the first day of kindergarten.

“You guys ready?”

“I am. I am so ready to meet your teacher.” Colby grinned at Liv. “Mrs. Copenhaver? Mrs. Copper?”

“Uncle Colby! She’s Mrs. Collins.”

“Yeah, Uncle Colby. Get it together.” Gordy winked and gave Colby a pat on the ass on his way by. “Get your backpack, Olivia.”

Olivia took off down the hall.

“You good?” Gordon asked, in that voice his mom used to use when she didn’t want him to overhear. He leaned in and gave Colby a quick kiss.

“I am. She’s in a good mood.” Colby wasn’t looking like he was in a bad mood either.
